Mary Moore Bailey grew up in Albuquerque. In 1967, she graduated from Highland High School, where she had studied with art teacher Frank McCulloch. After high school, she moved to Colorado and received a BA in fine arts and history from Western State College in Gunnison. In Colorado, California, and finally Washington State, she worked in advertising, marketing, and communication. Throughout this time, she continued painting, and has shown in galleries in Colorado, California, and Washington. She returned to Albuquerque earlier this year, and now paints full time.
Bailey says, “After almost fifty years away from New Mexico, returning and producing artwork has been a joy. Images that I've been using in my work throughout my adult life come from this land. Its history helped form the ideas basic to my painting. When I look out at the mesa or Sandia in the morning, I'm struck by the beauty as well as all the layers of history in New Mexico.
“I start painting from a graphite drawing – either of a stylized landscape or image. Then, using multiple layers of paint and glaze, I draw, paint and scratch on the surface. The idea is that life (and art) unfold during the layering process, while continuing to be connected throughout. While the original drawing image remains, layers of paint add mystery and complexity to the work – much like the New Mexican landscape.”
